The Power of Focus

The word that has been coming up for me in the past few weeks is ‘focus’! When I think of focus, I am reminded of this phrase: ‘if you have 25 priorities, you have none’. How many of us are feeling overwhelmed by all that we have to do? How many of us have taken a few minutes to think about what is really important, especially at this time of year?

When we think about great leaders, past, present and around the world, the word that comes up is ‘vision’. When we hear the names Ghandi, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King to name a few, we probably all know what they stood for. They had a passion and a clear vision that made an impact on the world. In other words they had focus. So, what does this mean for us in our lives, our careers and our everyday life? Here are some questions to get us thinking.

  • What legacy do I want to leave in my career, my family, my community?
  • What do I want to be known for?
  • What is important to me?
  • What am I choosing today, everyday?
  • What do I want more of, less of?
  • What went well this past year; what didn’t go as planned? What can I take away from this to refocus for the New Year?

Choose one, two or three of the above questions and take a few minutes, a few hours or a few days, to reflect and refocus for this New Year.

Often he who does too much, does too little. – Italian Proverb
